We're Taking 2023 One Day At A Time

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I cannot believe how fast 2022 flew by and we’re already one day into a new year. This might be a hot take, but I found 2022 to be more challenging and emotionally draining than 2020 and 2021 combined. I can’t speak for everyone but I know I wanted last year to be the year I picked up my life where it left off before march 2020 and over-achieved and over-compensated for the past two years. It didn’t quite go that way. But it did teach me two things. 1. Start when you're ready and 2. It’s okay to not be ready at the same time everyone else is. Today we're focusing on number 2.

As the new year was approaching I truly had no desire in me to hit the ground running on January 1st with a list of new goals for the “new me”. I’m burnt out to the core and that doesn't reset or disappear when the clock strikes 12. I also have a clear vision of the big goals and milestones I would like to achieve in 2023, I don’t know the path yet, and that's okay! Society has conditioned us to believe that January 1st is the time to show up or miss out on the year moment when in actuality, it’s not.

If you're walking into the new year grateful that you're just IN the new year, lean into that. You still have the entire year to honestly sit and think about what you want to do and complete it at your pace.

My recommendation when inviting change into your life at any point is to start now* and start small. Creating or getting rid of habits fight the routine we’ve already placed ourselves in. It’s not impossible to jump straight in and thrive but I find the most success in inviting healthy habits into my life when the transition is seamless, easy, and a building block for other healthy habits to come. Here are 5 easy habits to start in the new year.

Water FIRST

If you are looking to invite more health and wellness into your life in 2023, start by drinking more water. As simple as this is, you will see an improvement in your skin and increased energy throughout your day helping you accomplish more goals.

Make your bed every morning

This was my new year's resolution for 2022 and completely set the tone for my day. First of all, I loveee getting into a freshly made bed at the end of the day. Second of all, it opens the door for routine in the morning which I didn’t have at all in 2021. By the end of 2022, my morning routine consisted of making my bed, immediately getting ready for the day, making breakfast at home, then officially starting my day. Make your bed.

Add a few no-spend days to your week/month

If creating better financial habits is one of your goals for the new year, this is a great place to start. Throwing in a few “no spend days” into my life last year made me realize just how often I spend money when I go outside. Most goals including financial ones are rooted in discipline. Setting the goal to not spend money once a week or several times a month will help you build the discipline for larger financial goals throughout the year.

Declutter your virtual life

This one is an oldie but a goodie- delete what you don't need. I’m a firm believer that everything is energy and carrying old text, pictures, assignments, emails and so much more that you don't need is old energy and unnecessary. Create space in your life for your passions and the memories that the new year will bring.

Practice gratitude on a small scale

I don't know who needs to hear this but you don't need the $20 gratitude journal, $30 yoga mat, and subscription to the Calm App to start practicing gratitude. It’s a mindset that you can and will see a difference practicing after a week even if you don't keep a record of it. Some small steps, as simple as saying 3 things in your head you’re grateful for when you wake up, combatting every negative thought with 2 positives, and picking a positive affirmation/or mantra to get you through the week will help shift your mindset dramatically.

*When I say start the change now I mean this literally and figuratively. Everything on this list is small goals that require no money, no new tools, or a trip to amazon. There is no new month, season, year, or semester that can invite change unless you are ready and you never have to wait to start. I love you and you got this <3
